There’s Probably No God
A passionate pastor and ardent blogger, Eugene Cho, wrote a blog post about this story from the International Herald Tribune, the Global Edition of the NYT.
Basically, in a response to all of the advertisements that talk about God and faith and Christ, a comedy writer started a campaign to start an atheist advertisement campaign.
They raised enough money for 800 buses around London. The signs read: “There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.”
I think that the idea is great. We should welcome all sorts of conversations. In fact, I bet there will be more conversations about God from these signs than the other overtly Christian ones. So, an atheist advertisement ends up bringing more attention to God. Ooops. Another good point that Eugene brought up was that the very nature of the atheist position is a contrarian position. Meaning, their position is to deny an opposing position. But, as he asks, “What is your purpose?”
But I think the best part of all of this is this: “Probably.”
I guess the creator of these signs didn’t have enough panache to boldly declare, “There is no God.” Instead, they use the qualifier “Probably.” I’m not sure about you, but I don’t feel very confident about basing the fundamental motivations of my life on a “probably.” As Christians, we don’t base our life on a “probably,” we base it on a truth, specifically, Jesus (“I am the way and the truth and the life.” ~ John 14:6).
People don’t die for a “probably”; they die for a truth. And people shouldn’t live for a “probably.” Live for the Truth.
