Riding a Bike in a Globe
Recently, through the kindness of Irene, my family and I were able to go to the Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus. Theresa and I and the kids were ooohing and aaahing and applauding through each performance. The tasks that the performers were able to accomplish was nothing short of astounding.
They had elephants lying on their sides, tigers hopping, triple somersaults from the trapeze, women hanging by their hair and body contortionists that make your skin crawl. But one of the most fascinating feats that they had was fitting 6 motorcycles riding full speed in a tiny metal globe. In my opinion, this was the most awe-some feat of the night.
My mind began to wander into wonder at how much time and commitment went into perfecting that trick. Certainly, countless hours and accidents went into the finished product. And then, I wondered if, at any point, those performers ever stopped to evaluate that after all this time and hard work, at the end of the day, all their doing is riding a bike in a globe.
I love the taste of lobster, but I never order it, because it takes too much effort for a fingernail-portion of lobster meat. If the activities of our lives (jobs, hobbies, leisure) aren’t extensions of our worship to God, then all that time and hard work ends up in a fingernail-portion of value. Unless you live with an eternal mindset, then at the end of the day, all you’re really doing is riding a bike in a globe.
Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. – Col 3:2
